Gwales
One of a series of images depicting the outline map of Wales, placed on its side to resemble an island on the horizon. The idea of an imagined, desired and utopian Wales always beyond reach, but visible in the distance, epitomises the feelings that people have about their nations, never quite as they wish them to be. The reflection in the water suggests the shape of a heart, and also the way an iceberg is larger under the water than above. Wales is therefore partly submerged, its true character hidden from view. The title comes from a poem composed by Mererid Hopwood, inspired by the series of works.
